About the Main Street District Business Improvement Area

The Newmarket Main Street District Business Improvement Area (BIA) is a Mayoral subcommittee that represents the voice of the Town of Newmarket’s downtown business community.
The BIA is committed to improving and promoting the Main Street District area through investment and advocacy to maintain its position as Newmarket’s premier shopping, business, and entertainment destination. We strive to enhance the continued success of current members while seeking to attract more customers, merchants, businesses and commercial property owners.
The BIA was established in July 2006 with the assistance of the Town of Newmarket. It is comprised of more than 75 business and property owners in the Main Street District. Our goal is to create unique programs/events that promote Main Street as a distinct and progressive area.
Some activities include:
Marketing & Promotion Activities – building awareness about downtown Newmarket as an exciting destination for shopping and entertainment; increase visitor traffic and customer expenditures through targeted advertising and promotions. Business Recruitment & Retention — working to attract, retain and expand the Main Street businesses community. Special Events – attract and facilitate community festivals and arts/cultural events that further position the Main Street District as a community destination. The BIA coordinates some of the Town’s most popular, large-scale street festivals and events, including Canada Day, Fall Festival, and the Christmas Candlelight Parade. Seasonal Decorations – With the Town’s assistance, installs seasonal displays that provide a festive and attractive atmosphere for downtown visitors.

What does the BIA do for me?

The mandate of the BIA is two fold. To beautify the area and to promote Main St. businesses. Each year the board will decide the best way to invest funds to accomplish these mandates.

How does the BIA work ?

Main St. Newmarket BIA is run by a volunteer Board of Management elected from its members. The Board is nominated at an Annual General Meeting (AGM) and once approved by City Council, serves a four-year term concurrent with the term of Council. The Board works on behalf of its membership and meets regularly to develop budgets, set priorities, implement capital improvements, plan festivals, and promote the business area.

When are BIA meetings held?

BIA holds their meetings on the 3rd Tuesday of every month, at 7:30pm, usually at the Community Centre.
