NOMI is owned and operated by Kristi Cross, jewellery designer of Kris Cross Designs. In October 2007, she opened NOMI to showcase her work alongside the finest handcrafted gifts and accessories from across Canada and North America. The name NOMI honours her parents, NO(buyuki) and MI(tsuko), who have been great supporters of her pursuit of this dream. NOMI was created to support other independent artists and to offer a unique shopping experience along Newmarket’s historic Main Street. Kristi is quick to point out that she is not a silversmith, yet she uses her intuition to meld what might otherwise be seen as simple beadwork into original pieces. Using such techniques as hammering, oxidization, wire wrapping and otherwise manipulating her chosen materials – sterling silver, freshwater pearls and semi-precious stones – she creates what can best be described as striking selections. Think of her work as the “little black dress” of your jewellery collection. It’s simple, appropriate for all occasions, yet distinctive enough that it gets noticed and appreciated.
